Few sneakers have a legacy as rich as the Air Jordan 1 "Bred." From its rebellious origins in 1985 to its continued reissues, this colourway has cemented itself as a cornerstone of sneaker culture. Dubbed the "Banned" AJ1 due to its infamous clash with the NBA's uniform policy, the "Bred" colour scheme has transcended basketball to become a symbol of defiance, self-expression, and timeless style.

When Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984, the brand sought to disrupt the basketball sneaker market. The Air Jordan 1, designed by Peter Moore, debuted in 1985 in several bold colourways, but none were as controversial as the black-and-red combination. The NBA deemed it non-compliant with league regulations, resulting in a reported $5,000 fine each time Jordan wore them on the court. The myth of the AJ1 being banned is part of what makes it legendary, but in reality, it was the Nike Air Ship that sparked the controversy first. Nike, seizing the moment, turned the controversy into a marketing masterstroke, making the AJ1 "Bred" a must-have sneaker for rebels and sneakerheads alike. The nickname "Bred"—a fusion of "Black" and "Red"—was coined by the sneaker community to describe this defining colourway, and it has since become one of the most recognisable monikers in sneaker culture.
